AFSSN maintains quality control through Guiding Principles and Best Practices. Some examples of these are:

Guiding Principle
To ensure that bonding be supportive for the infant; continuity of care will have primary importance

Best Practices
Infants will have consistent care givers, who will, in addition to their role with the child facilitate support with the mother and child. Therefore, volunteers will not be used to provide care. This practice has the additional benefit of assisting in trust building between parent and care giver.

Guiding Principle
We support all parents (home care and centre based) in their own personal development.

Best Practice
We include other agencies to assist clients in their growth, e.g. job search, life skills and per-employment. Length of day - AFSSN supports parent's participating in school activities, moms may attend school for half day but need more hours of care AFSSN staff will provide referrals to helping agencies with regard to legal, medical, housing issues, counseling needs, etc.

Guiding Principle
Because the school system operates differently than the child care system, AFSSN will assist in preparing parents and children to make the move to the next system.

Best Practice
In supporting school readiness for both the parent and child;
  • workshops to be offered to assist parents in planning for their child in the school system
  • staff will review with the parent the learning that takes place in the playroom
  • make the parent aware of the curriculum
  • common messaging from board and all staff

Guiding Principle
We support parents in their understanding of healthy child development and age appropriate development. Parents will be provided with information regarding healthy and age appropriate development. Areas of concern will be discussed with the parent.

Best Practice
AFSSN supports parents in their understanding of healthy development and age appropriate skills by giving them information and discussing the issues that are of concern to them.

Guiding Principle
The Board of Directors and all staff will be fully acquainted with the Guiding Principles and Best Practices, to ensure standards of practice and common messaging to all external constituencies.

Best Practice
At the first board meeting of the year, the guiding principles and best practices will be reviewed. At the first staff meeting each year, the guiding principles and best practices will be reviewed.
